cats and dogs

pavlov your non-thinking dogs
stacked together like lincoln logs
don’t ask for whom the bell tolls
have no conception of their eternal souls
like a log each of them rolls
spinning on the spot in a log jam held
barking after they were easily felled
and no one was there to hear them fall
a bell rings and prompts a plaintive call

all the cats are hanging
off the end of bookshelves
testing gravity
cool as the cucumbers
that make them jump
and ask why the dogs rule this dump
ask why the cogs are a tool of this dump

it’s raining
cats and dogs
the reigning hats; the cogs
to rein in spats and slogs
make it all an easy roundabout
swinging
this is the game we’re bringing
